Drew 2016 Pinot Noir, Mendocino Ridge

By March 12, 2018 No Comments

Jason & Molly Drew fatefully found their beloved 26 acre property in 2004 within the Mendocino Ridge Appellation. They experienced an immediate “deja vu” when they walked the estate taking in the ancient oceanic soils, south facing slopes and California coastal climate, just 3 miles from the ocean.

Jason, not new to winemaking or viticulture, graduated from UC Santa Cruz with an emphasis on viticulture & then moved on to receive his masters in enology at Australia’s University of Adelaide. Most known for his work at Babcock in Santa Barbara, he knew he would eventually venture out on his own. Jason was determined to produce wines of greater restraint than he was finding in Santa Barbara & Napa. So, when he & Molly stumbled upon the property in Mendocino, they leaped at the opportunity.

Jason is committed to making small lot craft-coastal wines that express site specificity & traditional varietal character. Acidity is the true hallmark of Drew Wines. He specializes in Pinot & Syrah varieties and is determined to making wines with structure & at a lower scale of ripeness. The perfect balance of tannin and acid. His incredible intuition & skill allows him to know the exact moment to pick the fruit. “Pick right before the grapes are at optimal ripeness because they will continue to develop in the cellar.”

A true believer in Biodynamic farming practices. He describes it as, “the closest a farmer can get to a true expression of the site is by helping & taking care of the land, I’m giving the vines everything they need to be their very best.” In the cellar, it’s all about whole cluster, native yeast fermentations, hand punch downs, & mostly no fining or filtering. Open one of his bottles and you can call it a, “where have you been all my life moment”.

Cheers Jason, keep up the fantastic work!
