Marichal Grand Reserve “A” Tannat 2018

Alejandro Marichal and Juan Andres Marichal

After many years of work identifying the best destination for the grapes in each vineyard and seeing the best quality potential of each plot, we found that a sector of our Tannat vineyard planted more than 40 years ago that behaved year after year with superior characteristics. It was then that from 2005 we began to vinify it separately.

Rigorous vineyard management and vinification without too much intervention results in this 100% Tannat wine. One part is placed in French and American oak barrels for 18-20 months, the rest in a cement tank. It is not clarified, nor stabilized, nor is it filtered. Not all the vintages we can produce it, only the years that are really excellent and since it comes from a small plot with low production, the quantity is limited and never exceeds 2400 bottles.

Bodega Marichal is headed by winemakers Juan Andrés and Alejandro Marichal. They are a family-owned, Uruguayan winery originally established in 1938 and now they are into their third and fourth generation of family winemaking. The vineyards are located at an ideal latitude in the department, or province, of Canelones (15 miles north of Uruguay’s capitol, Montevideo) where the warm weather, cool Atlantic breezes and deep clay soil allow grape varieties like Tannat to thrive and achieve unique character.
